August, 15, 1995, that time start
for face the future. Let’s begin, on 1995 my graduated from high school, my
dream is continue to study in University, but my parents said: if you want
continue your study, you must pay your study by yourself. That time, I confused
what should I do? I have no idea, because I don’t have any experience or skill
for work. After 3 months running, my parents bough new taxi ( angkutan ). The
direction is Mojoagung to Wonosalam. My father asked me to help him, well… I
work with my father more lest 1.5 year. That time to make money a very easy,
Indonesia’s economy increased, for me working with my father is new experience
and acquire, he teaching me a lot of new knowledge, for example, must respect
to another people, treating humans equally regardless of status, stay humble,
don’t be arrogant, etc.
One year and half, I worked
with my father and learn from him a lot of experience. By the time, I met my
neighbor, my neighbor work send people to another country, like Malaysia, Arab
Saudi, Taiwan. Then we have a good conversation in his house. He asked me, do
you want work abroad? Working in abroad? I said, yes, working in America. But I
can’t speak English, I said. Well… don’t worry, I will help you, English is
easy, I got the Visa you just make passport, ok then I will ask permission to
my parents, America is far, it’s not near, good, you can go see your parents.
My parents and I have conversation, dad and mam, I want ask permission, I said,
what do you want? Eemmm, I will look for job in America…! What, excuse me, you
will work in America, are you sure about that? My father said, because you have
problem with your healthy, your asthma, your body, it’s not 100% good, are you
sure, you can work in America? I will try dad, if I get problem with my
healthy, I will go back home, I said. Well ok than, up to you now, your parents
can only pray for your success, my mother said.
Tree
months study English in Bali. Before I went to Bali, I have funny moment, this
about speaking English. My neighbor: Dik, can you speak English?
Didik : no, I can’t speak English. I can spoke
English just little.
My neighbor: don’t you worry dik,
I will helps you, but you must study hard too, if you can speak English, you
will get better job and good salary.
Didik: ok Mr, I will study
hard.
And
also my parents gave idea to study in Bali, well this opportunity I have to
take, because that is not ganna happen second time.
My
dad: dik, when will you go to America?
Didik:
as long as I got passport and visa plus ticket, I will go dad.
My
dad: how many percent did you speak English?
Didik:
I have no idea dad, maybe 20% or 25%, but I still not confidence to talk. If I
take English course, that will took long time, because I have six months
preparations my document, so I have Tree months for study.
My
dad: ok than, I have friend how can help you, he live in Denpasar Bali, but you
must stay in his house, he will give you idea, he has many good friends can spoke
English, from there you learn.
Didik:
brilliant idea dad, I love that, I want study hard when I get in Bali. Thank
you very much dad.
My
dad: you are welcome, we are your parents always pray for your success.
Several
months I stay in Bali, but I’m not stay in my father’s friend, I’m stay in my
father friend family, because his house near Kuta Beach, just took half hour by
bicycle. I like stay in Bali, people are respect and friendly, every day I went
to kuta beach for met native speaker. It is not easy to ask native speaker talk
to me, because they don’t like with someone who they don’t know them, strange
people, they keep way from me, even though I said nice to them.
Didik: excuse me, can I
speak with you?
Native
speaker: yes, please…may I help you?
From these conversation with native speaker I
confused and don’t understand what they said. That time I had been spoken with
couple native speaker, I’m little nervous when I talk with them. We star talk
slowly because they know it if I can’t speaking English. For beginning, they
ask my name, where am I from? Where do I live in Bali, how many family do I
have? Why I interest study English? That’s many question they ask, I can just
answer what I have understand, if some question I can’t answer, they help me to
answer. I met a few native speakers, they from different country around the
world, example, Australia, America, New Zealand, England, Canada, China, etc.
but a lot of Australian life in Bali, they said, Bali is my second home town, fly
from Bali to Australia just 4 hours, it’s not need long fly. Tree month passed,
I have go back to my home town, because that has a lot something to do must be
done.
Tree
days after returned from Bali, immediately I go to my friend’s house for ask
what’s next? Than my friend ask me to make passport and health check up
continue go to America embassy in Jakarta.
My
neighbor: dik you must make passport than health check up, finish that we will
go to America embassy in Jakarta, get ready for your money, maybe 5 millions
rupiah.
Didik:
ok than, I will ask my parents, thank you for the information.
My
neighbor: you are welcome and don’t forget brings nice clothes for interview in
America embassy.
Five days later, I got the passport
and health check up and the others document, my neighbor and I went to Jakarta
for interview, just like I hope, everything goes well as I expected. I got visa
for 5 years, I’m so happy that time, because America’s Visa is very difficult.
Anyway my friend and I arrived in John F Kennedy airport on August 1998, than
my others friend picked me up to the his house at New jersey, need 1 hour for
drove the car from New York to New Jersey. I stayed in his house a few weeks,
after that I went to Boston for worked, my jobs is dishwasher, example, clean
all dish, clean Dining room, mans room and woman room. And also I help chef for
preparation to cook. Well, I’m do this job 3.5 years, I love this job, because
I’m working with good people and different country, they from China, Korea,
Japan, Mexico, and America. Worked with them made me become the man, they
teaching a lot of new experience and knowledge, of course English.
Since
I stayed in America, I got knowledge from good people when I worked with them,
because of them I can speak good English. America for me is the best country,
they have good place for living and good education, it is better living with
family. If you got American resident, you get good life, for example, if you
sick, you can got free changer from hospital and free changer for education,
start from kindergarten, elementary school, junior high school, senior high
school, and University. In America, there a lot of people from different
culture and religion, they can live together. I knew almost every country in
this world hate American, because America always made the others country
disaster, they want every county in this earth follow them. America want
control everything, they want become the bigger country on the world.
But
different with me when I live for a few years in America, it good, awesome,
talking about American, they have good respect to the others, friendly to
anyone. And America has four season, winter, autumn, summer, spring. About
food, this country gave many different menu, start from cheap food until high
class, for cheap food, hotdog, hamburger, fish and chips, and for high class
food, steak, salmon, Italian food, etc. depends on your money. Especially
restaurant who served fast food, like as, Mc Donald, Burger King, pizza, etc.
you can pay 5 or 10 dollars/ order plus drink. For soft drink you can get 6
cans for 1.99 cents, product from coca-cola, Pepsi. America still number one
for live.
That’s all my little story, I hope this can
help you to decide or preparation when you want trip to America. But before you
go to America, your English must good, not only money, but speaking skill also
very important. As long as your English good, you can have good life. Thank you
